Debunking the Muscle Myth: Your Guide to Toned Fitness

Here’s a myth that seems to never die: the myth is this—if you’re a woman and you say, “Man, I want to work out, I want to get toned.” That’s a word we hear a lot. “I want to get toned, I want to tone up, but I’m afraid I’m going to get too big and bulky.” Let me help you.

I’ve trained one woman in 20 years who could put on what you would think would be a lot of muscle mass. Looking back, I’m not even sure she was a woman because she had a five o’clock shadow. She sexually harassed me like I’ve never been harassed in my life. Some of the lines she would use, I would say, “Man, I’m going to write that line down. That was pretty funny.” I might use that one myself. What I am saying is you don’t have to worry about looking like a man because you work out with weights!

In the last 20 years, I have trained over a thousand women and I have had one woman client that could have been a professional bodybuilder. I have trained a lot of competitors, honestly, I train everyone, any goal someone might have I do that. But the women competitors that I train, their one desire is to put on muscle mass. They say, “I want to build glutes, Don.” I say, “You’re on the program, just stay the course, stay the course, you’re going to build those glutes. I want to build these shoulders. Just stay the course, just keep doing what I’m saying.”

They want to build muscle mass. And most of these women who work out an hour a day, six days a week, they’re meticulous about their nutrition to build muscle mass. They’re never satisfied. They always say the same thing, “I’m not building enough muscle mass.” And most of these women, they would look like somebody on Shape Magazine who you’d say, “That’s toned.”

So let me help you, building too much muscle is not going to happen. If you’re a woman, and you think, “I’m going to put on too much muscle mass,” that’s nonsense, and it’s never going to happen.
